I feel like I have been exploring a lot of very big concepts lately, so I wanted to cover something more fun. Dragons are fun. They are, in my opinion, the most fantasy of fantasy creatures. In The Enigma Drift, Dragons have a very special role.
All dragons and dragon-like creatures are born from one singular ancient dragon, Thoora. Known throughout the whole world, she is said to be one of the oldest living things in all of The Enigma Drift. She lives at the top of the tallest mountain in the world known as The Dragon Spire. At 40,000 feet above sea level, with the last 10,000 being completely a sheer 90 degree cliff face, few if any mortals have seen the top.
At the top, Thoora rests in a nest that she rarely leaves. When she lays a fresh set of eggs, they are submerged in a large mud puddle that encompasses most of the peak of The Dragon Spire. Thoora’s eggs do not all hatch at the same time. Some take only weeks to hatch, others take thousands of years. How long the egg takes to hatch determine what kind of creature it will be. Additionally, the position in the enigma sea and the sovereign domain The Dragon Spire is in can determine things like number of legs, number of wings, color, and personality. In another one of these I will write out a whole chart about all the determining factors.
Regardless of when they hatch, the first thing they all see when the emerge from the mud puddle is Thoora. Thoora will then determine their worth by throwing them off of the top of The Dragon Spire. Many of the weaker dragon variants don’t survive the drop from the peak, but the ones that do spread out and inhabit the whole world. This includes a rare humanoid type dragon that lives amongst other creatures in normal society.
